How to teach babies to hold their breath in a seated submersion

At Paradise Swim children will learn how to submerge underwater from a seated position at the age of 12-18months. Before they learn this skill, children will understand and know a basic breath holding cue taught in previous swimming lessons. This basic breath holding cue will assist children in their ability to know when water in coming and their overall water confidence.

A seated submersion is taught at Paradise Swim through games of 'Humpty dumpty' and 'Jelly on a plate'. These activities help little swimmers to build confidence independently submerging their head underwater from the mat and navigating back to the surface.

'Humpty Dumpty'

  • Swimmers sit on the side of the mat

  • Humpty Dumpty is sung by teacher

  • Swimmers will lean forwards into the water kicking legs to parents for a 3 second submersion.

'Jelly on a Plate'

  • Swimmers sit on side of the mat

  • Jelly on a plate is sung by teacher while wobbling the mat

  • Swimmers will lean forward and kick to parents

Independently submerging is a process; it begins with the parent's assisting children by holding their hands, guiding them into the water. Once the swimmer builds confidence parents can use a breath holding cue ('name, ready, go!') and the swimmer will learn to lean forward to self-submerge in the water.
