Learning Backstroke for Beginners

At Paradise Swim, we introduce kicking on our back in our child and parent classes and maintain this practice up until our last level. We maintain the practice of swimming on your back as we believe being comfortable swimming on your back is important due to a number of reasons such as safety, breathing, confidence and skill development.

In our stroke development levels (frog, stingray, marlin) we begin to teach children backstroke. In our frog level this looks like swimming half the pool length doing straight circle arms on their back, kicking legs, head still and eyes up both with and without the kickboard.

Once the child is competent with doing backstroke both with and without the kickboard for half the pool length, they then progress to stingray which consists of swimming backstroke for the entire length of the pool both with and without the kickboard. In this level we focus on keeping the child's head still while swimming, arms straight with fingers together, tummies up and straight kicking legs.
