Learning to Side breath

At Paradise Swim our swimmers learn to side breath in our 'Frog' format. When learning to swim rolling and breathing can be a tricky skill at first. It is a little uncomfortable for our swimmers and a bit confusing. Sometimes we see a little bit of a regression around the start of our 'Frog' level. It is important to be patient and allow our little fish to get comfortable with rolling, so they do not panic.

Teaching roll to breath has some key aspects:

  • Chin on chest: it is important to have our chin on our chest as it makes rolling to the side easier for little swimmers. It brings their kicking feet to the surface and allows them to easily rotate their arms.

  • Side Breathing: At paradise Swim we teach 1, 2, roll and breath as the 3rd arm comes over. We encourage kids to roll to the wall then roll to the parents helping them to understand the concept.

  • Kicking Legs: Fast straight kicking legs is very important and helps us to make sure we can roll to the side not forward. If we aren't kicking our legs sink forcing us to breath forward not to the side.

  • Ear to shoulder: When swimmers understand the concept of side breathing, we teach an ear to shoulder technique. this requires swimmers to have their chin on chest and roll to the side with their ear brushing against their shoulder. This helps swimmers to move quickly through the water.

Feel free to ask any of our friendly teachers for any extra tips or questions.
