Correct head positioning is a key foundational skill for kids, when learning freestyle in swimming lessons.
Why is it important?
Body alignment: Correct head positioning aids in developing and maintaining a streamlined position, as taught in the rocket drill.
Breathing: When learning freestyle, correct head positioning is key for kids to learn how and when to breathe. When kids are at the stage they are learning to side breath, correct head positioning is crucial as it aids in the understanding and developing of this skill.
Coordination: When learning to swim, correct head positioning helps in forming a strong foundation for learning other freestyle skills such as side breathing, correct arm movements and kicking.
At Paradise Swim we teach correct head positioning by practicing a skill we call 'rockets'. Rockets are key for learning correct head positioning as this reinforces the practice of the streamline aspect of freestyle.
Swim instructors reinforce correct head positioning by encouraging kids to put their 'chin on chest'. Putting our chin on chest means that kicking legs come to the surface aiding body alignment. Chin on chest is important to get right early because it is essential for our stroke development classes.
